A shoutout to an awesome cause.
Right, so I have this really cool proposal to all the ladies out there. No, it is not my junk. Don’t get so excited. Or giggly.
Ever since my sister Emma got diagnosed with cancer in January 2010, our entire household has done a bucket of awesome things to help cancer awareness and give back to the companies and charities that have helped us get through. Mikayla is currently secretary at the CanTeen base in Taranaki, I’ve put my body through rigorous torment last year by rock-climbing non-stop for 12 hours to fundraise for CanTeen and CCF, et cetera.
But my step-mum has been hit the hardest by the ordeal. With Emma being diagnosed, Dad has had to work on his lonesome to pay the way around the house and Jo has had to close down the FotoJo business temporarily to make room for Emma’s care. Now, before you go all pity party, this is not the point of the post. We are absolutely getting on fine and have tantamounts of support as is. Emma is goods, we are all the goods. Chill.
No, the point of this post is Jo’s latest project. It started with a lot of photos done by Jo with Emma wearing headbands she had made herself during hospital stays and being bored. Someone happened to see the headband, inquire about its origin and then ask if Jo would make one for her child. One thing lead to another, and now it has become a full blown project.
The rationale behind it is that young girls who get cancer lose their hair within about three months of treatment, and that’s a massive blow for them. It impacts their self-esteem and generally doesn’t feel nice for anyone. The point of the headband is to inspire some confidence back into these people and keep them positive about the long, long journey ahead.
Jo has set up a home store and a Facebook page to get the business off of the ground, but at the moment, things are a little uneasy because of the lack of respite care at home. This is where you guys come in. Have a nose, browse the pictures and if you like what you see, like the page and maybe order one for yourself. A section of the money will go towards Child Cancer Foundation Taranaki to help local patients get the well-deserved support that they need, and for every four headbands sold, headband number 5 will be shipped free of charge to a cancer patient at Starship Hospital.
They are hand-made and you aren’t going to see anything like them anywhere. Made to order and can be made to fit absolutely anyone. It’s for a bloody good cause and I’m proud to be getting behind it. So if you’re not busy or have a spare couple of minutes, have a browse. Who knows? Maybe you’ll order one for yourself. And I tell you, giving away headband number 5 is an awesome feeling.
Peace out, guys. Check out the site.
